Skin Talk 101 : Serums

7 Jul 2025
by Amber

A serum is a powerful skincare product packed with active ingredients. In this blog, you'll discover what a face serum is, what it does for your skin, and how to use it correctly in your routine. We also explain the difference between a serum and a cream, and help you choose which serum is best for your skin type.

What is a serum?

A serum is a lightweight, concentrated liquid that is quickly absorbed into the skin. It is packed with active ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid, which target specific skin concerns such as dullness, fine lines, or blemishes.

When and how to use a serum?

Apply a serum after your toner and before your cream. A few drops are enough – gently press it into your cleansed skin. Since serums are so concentrated, they don’t need a thick layer to be effective.

Different types of serums

✧ Hydrating serum

These serums often contain hyaluronic acid and are perfect for dry or dehydrated skin. They help retain moisture, making your skin feel plumper and softer.

✧ Brightening serum

With ingredients like vitamin C or niacinamide, these serums give your skin a healthy glow and help fade pigmentation spots.

✧ Anti-aging serum

These serums often contain peptides, retinol, or antioxidants. They improve skin elasticity and help reduce fine lines.

✧ Calming serum

If you have sensitive or easily irritated skin, calming serums with ingredients like centella asiatica or panthenol help reduce redness and calm your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions about Serums

✧ What is the difference between a serum and a cream?

A serum contains more active ingredients and is lighter in texture than a cream. It penetrates deeper into the skin, while a cream mainly works on the surface to protect and hydrate.

✧ How do you apply a serum?

After cleansing and toning, apply a few drops of serum with your fingertips. Gently press it into the skin until it absorbs. Follow with a cream.

✧ When do you use a serum?

You use a serum daily, usually in the evening. For some serums (such as hydrating or brightening types), you can also use them in the morning. For retinol, only use it in the evening and always apply SPF during the day.

✧ Can I use multiple serums at once?

Yes, this is called layering. Make sure the ingredients work well together (e.g., niacinamide + hyaluronic acid). Apply up to 2–3 serums at once, from thin to thick consistency.

✧ Which serum is right for my skin type?

For dry skin, choose hyaluronic acid. For blemishes, niacinamide or tea tree work well. For a glow, try vitamin C. For sensitive skin, go for centella or panthenol.
