Moisturizers and SPF are the foundation of every skincare routine. Without proper hydration and sun protection, your skin barrier weakens – leading to dryness, irritation, or premature aging. In this Skin Talk, we’ll explain what moisturizers do, the different types, when to use them, and how SPF fits into your routine.

What is a moisturizer?

A moisturizer is a skincare product that hydrates the skin and prevents moisture loss by strengthening the skin barrier. Whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin – there’s a formula for you, from lightweight gels to rich balms.

Morning vs. Evening

Morning: Choose a lightweight texture that layers well under SPF and makeup. Many Korean sunscreens are hydrating enough to double as a day cream.

Evening: At night, go for a richer moisturizer that helps repair and nourish the skin while you sleep.

Types of moisturizers

✧ Gel

Light, water-based texture. Ideal for oily or combination skin. Absorbs quickly and hydrates without feeling heavy.

✧ Emulsion / Lotion

Light fluid texture, ideal for normal to combination skin. Hydrates without leaving a greasy finish.

✧ Cream

Richer texture that deeply nourishes the skin. Great for normal to dry skin types.

✧ Balm / Ointment

Thick, protective formulas ideal for very dry or damaged skin. Locks in moisture and shields the skin barrier.

✧ Sleeping Mask

An extra boost of hydration for nighttime. Use as the final step of your evening routine a few times per week.

Frequently Asked Questions about Moisturizers & SPF

✧ Do I need both a moisturizer and SPF in the morning?

Yes – unless your sunscreen is hydrating enough to serve as both. Many Korean sunscreens are formulated to offer moisture and UV protection, but drier skin types may still benefit from using a separate moisturizer underneath.

✧ What order should I apply moisturizer and SPF?

Apply your moisturizer first, then sunscreen. SPF is always the last step in your morning skincare routine – unless you’re wearing makeup.

✧ Can oily skin skip moisturizer?

No – oily skin still needs hydration. Skipping moisturizer can actually trigger your skin to produce more oil. Choose a lightweight gel moisturizer that hydrates without clogging pores.

✧ Should I use a different moisturizer at night?

Yes – your nighttime routine can include a richer or more reparative moisturizer that supports skin regeneration while you sleep.

✧ Can I apply makeup over my SPF?

Yes – after applying sunscreen, let it absorb for a few minutes before layering makeup. Choose a sunscreen that sits well under foundation and doesn't pill.
