What does SPF 30 mean?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, indicates how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, the type of radiation responsible for sunburn. An SPF 30 sunscreen means your skin is protected 30 times longer before burning than if you were not wearing sunscreen. If your skin would normally burn after 15 minutes in the sun, SPF 30 could theoretically protect it for up to 450 minutes (that’s about 7.5 hours). Keep in mind, though, that you should always reapply your face sunscreen every two hours for the best protection.

How often should you apply SPF 30 sunscreen?

To stay well protected, SPF 30 sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially if you’re spending time in the sun, swimming, or sweating. Don’t forget that using a generous amount matters too: for your face, use about a walnut-sized amount, and for your body, around a shot glass per body part. Reapply after sweating or swimming for the best results.

SPF 30 or SPF 50 sunscreen?

For daily use, an SPF 30 sunscreen is a great choice for many people, especially if you don’t burn easily or spend most of your time indoors with occasional sun exposure. If you have sensitive skin or expect intense sun exposure, an SPF 50 sunscreen may offer additional protection.
